Prisoner court record books (indexed), 1896-1919 (bulk 1918-1919).

These books document charges brought against inmates for various offenses by guards and judgments reached in the penitentiary's in-house court proceedings for prisoners. Although these records changed somewhat in format through the years, the following information was typically recorded: date of charge; prisoner's name and sometimes number; charge; guard's name; type of punishment; and length of sentence. Early books (1896-1912) included the house, walk, and cell of the prisoner and accounted for severity of punishments under specific categories like chains, straps, solitary, and miscellaneous. Beginning in 1900, the prisoner's home county was also recorded. By 1908, offenses were rated by grades or degrees of seriousness. One book (1918-1919) was indexed in a separate volume (see KYSV89-A57).
